Somewhere In Time. Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Posted By Demnagirl On Wednesday, February 27, 2008 0 comments
While director Jeannot Szwarc's 1980 time-travel romance nearly drowned in a sea of its own bathos, the score of the Christopher Reeve/Jane Seymour vehicle has become something of a word-of-mouth classic. Chalk that status up to the great English composer John Barry, whose lushly romantic score has largely overshadowed the film it was written for. Note to Titanic fans: if you liked the score for that film, you may fall in love with (or to) this one as well.

Bustan Abraham - Collections

Posted By Demnagirl On Sunday, February 24, 2008 1 comments
Many attempts have been made by musicians to create a synthesis between Eastern and Western cultures. Generally the result is that either the Western or Eastern form dominates while the other is merely used for ornamentation. For the past several years Bustan Abraham has met this challenge and has succeeded in pioneering a unique form of instrumental music which combines elements of both these Eastern and Western forms without sacrificing the musical integrity of either.

Bustan (Hebrew and Arabic meaning, "garden of fruits and essences," in this case the garden of Abraham, father of Isaac and Ishmail) was founded in 1991 by Avshalom Farjun. It comprises seven distinguished Israeli musicians, both Jews and Arabs, who have combined their musical experience as composers, soloists and heads of musical ensembles to create original music on a very high international level.
The musical backgrounds of Bustan Abraham's members are very rich and represent an astonishing variety of musical cultures including classical Arabic music, classical European music, jazz, Turkish, Persian and Indian music, flamenco and American folk music.
The instruments played are unusually diverse. Middle Eastern instruments include the oud (Arab lute), qanoun (oriental zither) and a range of percussion instruments such as durbakkeh, daff, zarb and bandir frame drums to name only a few. These are joined by Western instruments including transverse flute, classical and flamenco guitar, contrabass, electric bass, and 5-string banjo. In addition the violin is utilized in both Middle Eastern as well as Western forms of playing. Also represented is an astonishing array of international percussion instruments too numerous to mention! The successful integration of this combination of instruments has never before been presented on the concert stage. The music which embodies this rich diversity is entirely original and was composed and arranged in a cooperative effort by all members of the group.

Bustan aspires to create a new musical form, which speaks to both Eastern and Western audiences, and to pave the way for other joint creative efforts between Arabs and Jews. The group has become a symbol of uncompromising instrumental composition, which has created a new standard of originality in Israeli music, and world music in general, and has received rave reviews to that effect from audiences and critics alike.
Bustan have toured extensively throughout the world between 1992 & 2003 it's powerful stage performance have been always greeted with standing ovations by audiences.

Prem Joshua & Chintan - Ahir

Posted By Demnagirl On Friday, February 22, 2008 0 comments
At 18, a German student saw Ravi Shankar perform and his life was changed forever. Prem Joshua spent the next 20 years in India, mastering the sitar and learning the traditions of Indian music. As his own style developed, he blended Eastern styles and instruments with Western Jazz forms using Indian flutes, sax, electronica and tarana-style (wordless) vocals.
Already considered a master musician in India, where he has sold nearly 100,000 records, Prem Joshua is building audience--and buzz--with every new album, and is poised to take North America by storm.

Product Description
Prem Joshua's funky, downtempo, Indo-Global grooves pulse around the clock in Goa's eternal twilight. Uniting the essence of Indian raga with infectious, lush electronica, Ahir reveals why the Times of India dubbed Prem Joshua "the guru of 21st century world fusion music ."
With Ahir, multi-instrumentalists and composers Prem Joshua and Chintan harvest the creative fruits of a 15-year musical partnership. Drawing on material from their recent world tours and travels through India, they take Prem Joshua's signature modern raga sound into exciting new terrain, resulting in a true masterpiece of fresh and inspired global music.
Ahir is Prem Joshua's seventh U.S. release.

Golden Slumbers - A Father's Lullaby

Posted By Demnagirl On Thursday, February 21, 2008 0 comments
Reviews
This is a real sleeper of an album, literally. Smooth-jazz musicians--including Peter White, Dave Koz, Norman Brown, David Benoit, and others--play music here to put babies to sleep. Fans of New Age music, specifically what came out of the Pacific Northwest in the '80s, may find many of these 14 tracks reminiscent of that period. Long-time listeners of smooth-jazz radio may be reminded of the kind of ethereal, spacey music that was played in the early days of the format. Many of the songs are as obvious as Brian Culbertson's somnambulating "Brahms' Lullaby" and Koz's "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," but some are inspired choices with creative arrangements and strong performances. Koz and his brother Jeff shine on the Beatles' title tune and the other Lennon/McCartney chestnut, "Blackbird." Brown's take on James Taylor's "You Can Close Your Eyes" is also moving, while not straying from the stillness of the concept. Perhaps the standout track is the superb performance of vocalist John Stoddart on Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely.

Egypt - A Musical Voyage Upper Egypt Ensemble

Posted By Demnagirl On Sunday, February 17, 2008 0 comments
Experience a musical voyage from the city to the Desert. The Upper Egypt Ensemble plays traditional folkloric music from the villages along the Nile river. The music features the mizmar, a brilliant, shimmering sounding folk oboe, and the tabla baladi, a drum capable of exciting earthy rhythms. Together they make a powerful combination used to provide music for festivals and celebrations and while still contemporary, provide a living link with the ancient musical traditions of Egypt.

Renaud Garcia Fons - Oriental Bass

Posted By Demnagirl On Sunday, February 17, 2008 0 comments
Playing a five-string acoustic bass, Renaud Garcia-Fons offers a type of global music that owes some of its potency and stylistic flexibility to jazz improvisation. But Garcia-Fons writes in the short liner note to Oriental Bass that his dream of a bass "half Gypsy and half Mauretanian" takes the instrument through Andalusia and the Mediterranean. His compositions travel the same routes, drawing in trombone, flutes, accordion, flamenco guitar, tablas, lute, derbouka, daf, and more. The mix of hand percussion from Eastern Europe and North Africa with flamenco flairs makes Garcia-Fons's music dizzying. This is very springy music, bouncing and bounding with choruses of horns pulsing powerfully. Few composers can balance, much less thrive in, the panoply of national styles that Garcia-Fons draws in with Oriental Bass.

Al Gromer Khan - Collection

Posted By Demnagirl On Friday, February 15, 2008 1 comments
Né Alois Gromer, Al Gromer Khan was born on April 8, 1946 at farm Hohentann (municipality Altusried/Allgäu) in alpine foothills of Bavaria between Lake Constance and Munich. He spent his early years in England, Morocco and India, where his father worked in the Foreign Office. Gromer Khan claims that he was drawn to the "mysteries of sound" from the first, be it the sound of the bells worn by the Bavarian cows grazing in the alpine meadows near his birthplace, Indian stringed instruments, the drums of North Africa or the "singing" telephone wires on the wind in the freezing Bavarian winters. Gromer Khan claims to have rejected the academic or diplomatic careers his parents expected him to take up.

The 1960s found a twenty-something Al Gromer in London where he took part in a number of creative experiments which were to have a lasting influence on him. According to Gromer Khan, the Prince Tiane na Champassak of Laos introduced him to tantric art and pop star Marc Bolan invited him to join in the all-night jam sessions he hosted. He explored psycho-acoustic phenomena with film director Mike Figgis, and saxophonist Ronnie Scott of Ronnie Scott's Jazzclub, who introduced Al to Ben Webster, Max Roach and Miles Davis, while Cat Stevens, now Yusuf Islam, gave him a taste for English poetry.
