Charles Mingus - East Coasting
This sextet session dates from 1957, when the volcanic bassist and composer was first assembling his Jazz Workshop. Mingus had already put together the core of the band that would reach its summit two years later with Mingus Ah Um, including saxophonist Shafi Hadi, trombonist Jimmy Knepper, and drummer Dannie Richmond, who would be with Mingus's bands for the next two decades. The music has Mingus's distinct stamp, the rhythmic aggressiveness, sudden time (and mood) shifts, contrapuntal themes, and a palette of sounds that reaches back through bop to early jazz for the vocalizing, plunger-muted horns. His bass often sounds like articulate thunder as he presses his musicians toward a unique musical vision. Completing the group are two striking soloists: the seldom-heard trumpeter Clarence Shaw, best known for his work on Mingus's contemporaneous New Tijuana Moods, who combines thoughtful hesitancy and melodic daring; and pianist Bill Evans, whose distinctive musical presence and lyric imagination add to Mingus's often dense harmonies. The turbulent "West Coast Ghost" and the emotionally charged "Celia" stand out.

Chet Baker - Chet
Chet Baker's 1959 (reissued in 1987) release, CHET, is a romantic yet melancholy collection of mostly ballads. Baker doesn't sing here, but his highly emotive and lyrical trumpet playing makes this album more than compelling. Most importantly, this is one of the few recording sessions where he was accompanied by the legendary pianist, Bill Evans. Evans and Baker's approaches to jazz were uniquely individual, yet they both imbued their musical vocabulary with a high degree of pathos; they also shared a great love for soft, delicate ballads.
On "Alone Together" and "If You Could See Me Now," Evans plays a subtle yet penetrating piano introduction, and Baker enters with his distinctly rich and breathy tone. Truly a great musical pair, Baker and Evans lead an all-star band in what can only be characterized as relaxed but reflective jazz. A merging of East and West Coast cool jazz styles, CHET is an album that emphasizes instrumental restraint, yet deep musical tenderness.

Magic Marrackech By Claude Challe
Claude Challe (born in 1945 in Tunisia) is a French DJ and club impressario of Tunisian descent. He is perhaps best known as the founder of Buddha Bar.
Aged three years, Claude Challe arrived in France. Growing up with a potent fascination with Asian mysticism and a deep respect for ancient cultures, Challe attended Rabbinical school and studied Judaism as a young man.
Challe's manual dexterity as a DJ was foreshadowed in his youth, when at the age of 19, he opened a forward-thinking hair salon in Paris, for which he quickly became known as "the man with the golden scissors." As Parisian jet-setters flocked to his door, Challe abandoned the salon and lived-out a hippy dream as part of a tribe in Sardinia, Italy.
Soon thereafter, Challe travelled to India, Nepal and Indonesia. He reportedly tries to combine Occidental elements with spiritual elements in his music.
Challe returned home to France and was introduced to the sounds of New Age musicians Andreas Vollenweider and Ennio Morricone. He soon became addicted to the country's burgeoning nightlife.
Challe managed a series of France's most famed hotspots, including Le Prive in 1974; Le Centre Ville in fashionable Les Halles(1979); Les Bains-Douches (1984); El Divino in Ibiza (1992); and - perhaps most notably - Buddha Bar in 1996.
The chic restaurant / club became a popular destination for Europe's most glamorous people and it was subsequently the inspiration for Challe's immensely successful Buddha Bar mix compilations.
Challe went on to enjoy success with huge events such as the "Reveillon de Mondes" event for 50 000 people, held at Vincennes and produced in conjunction with Radio Nova.
By 1996, Challe launched the record label Chall'o Music. Challe has been quoted as saying, "I consider the art of DJ-ing to be the passion of life. When I'm DJ-ing, I give myself to the people. When I play, I'm in the music."
Today, Claude Challe's DJ booth comprises three Technics SL-1200 series turntables; four Denon dual-drive CD players or two Pioneer CDJ-1000 digital decks; and either a Rane or an Allen & Heath mixer.

Desert Roses and Arabian Rhythms Collection
When Sting collaborated with Cheb Mami on the Brand New Day track "Desert Rose," he created a surprising demand for Arabic crossover pop. This collection provides a suitable next stop for those whose taste was whetted by that collaboration. Egyptian singer Natacha Atlas opens the album with "Mon Amie la Rose," a maudlin little French tune she twists through her wringer until it is utterly transformed. "Desert Rose" turns up as a frisky remix by Victor Calderone, while Rachid Taha and the trance choir, B'Net Marrakech, appear in the compelling, orchestrated "Qalantica." Mami is heard on his own on one tune, but is eclipsed by the gut-shredding Khaled, the undisputed king of Algerian rai. The harder-edged electronic outings are standouts, while the tracks that are the Arabic equivalent of adolescent pop don't hold up nearly as well. This compilation, however, mostly eschews the dross in favor of tunes that go the distance.

Both Arabian Travels collections document the extraordinary power and far-reaching influence of music from the Near and Middle East and North Africa, the music of the Islamic Diaspora. A host of different ethnic groups inhabit the Arab world, whose shared musical culture is earmarked by several easily recognized characteristics. The flowing, highly ornamented melody lines based on skilled improvisation, the linking of smaller melodic kernels to form a larger arrangement like the patterned tiles decorating the wall of a mosque, the use of sound to effect spiritual transport and an atmosphere of immanence. These are some of the distinguishing features of Arabian music, along with the distinctive sounds of instruments such as the oud (the Arab mandolin) and the spiky report of the taut-skinned darbuka drum.
As these two collections show, the allure of this mysterious music radiates beyond the borders of Arabic nations. Musicians in the West, especially those involved with various forms of electronic and dance music, have noted the close association between music and trance states in Arabian culture. Conversely, artists from the Arab world - who have always been adept at assimilating outside influences - have begun to integrate contemporary technology within their own music, blending electronic timbres with centuries-old melodies and instruments. Karim Baggili Quartet - Cuatro Con Cuatro
Born in Belgium in 1976 with Jordanian and Yugoslavian origins, Karim Baggili is a young composer, self-taught guitarist and oud player. He began playing the electric
guitar at the age of 16. At 20, he starts working the different techniques of the flamenco guitar and acquires an Arabic lute (oud) during one of his many trips to Jordan.
His first CD was released in 2002, and he takes part in many CD recordings. He composes the music of several documentaries and one short film.
He plays in several groups, like Traces, Dazibao and Turdus Philomelos. He also plays with jazz pianist Nathalie Loriers and takes part on stage and in studio with the English singer Melanie Gabriel.
Today, he performs with three exceptional musicians in his new band, Karim Baggili Quartet. His group was born while meeting musicians of different horizons. Every instrument brought a new dimension and stamp to the existing pieces. The cello strengthens the rhythmic aspect of the flamenco and brings sweetness to its lyrical side. The flute brings the sound of the jazz flamenco already used by numerous groups in Spain. As for the different percussions (cajon, darbouka, maracas, banked, etc.), they offer a rich palette in tones and South American rhythms. The compositions created since then are thought out and written specifically for these new optics. Although a new group, they hold promise for a very bright future. —Courtesy Calabash Music
