SAVINA YANNATOU
Born in Athens, Greece, Savina Yannatou studied song with
G.Georilopoulou at the National Conservatory and later with Spyros Sakkas at the
Workshop of Vocal Art in Athens. She attended postgraduate studies (performance
and communication skills) at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, with a
scholarship awarded by the Mousigetis Foundation.
Her professional career
started in 1979 with the program “Here is Lilipoupoli” of the Greek National
Radio 3. Since then she has collaborated with many Greek composers like
Platonos,Grigoriou, Maragopoulos, Katsoulis, Mamagakis, Kipourgos, and Georgiou.
Her discography comprises about 30 LPs (personal ones and participations). For
more than 10 years she has been a member of the Workshop of Old Music, for which
she has performed medieval, renaissance and baroque music. She has also
participated in festivals and workshops of electric and improvised music as a
performer and a composer as well. At the same time she is involved in free
improvisation in collaboration with jazz musicians.
She has composed music
for documentaries, video-art and theater in collaboration with S.Hatzaki, N.
Kontouri, S.Stago, M.Santorineo and A.Kralli, for the National Theater, the
Municipal Regional Theatre in Larissa the “Ex machine” theater and ERT (Greek
Radio Television). She has also collaborated with the choreographer N.Zouka for
the production of two dance theater plays.Since 1994 she has collaborated with
the group “Primavera En Salonico” and they have recorded “Spring inSalonica”,
“Songs of the Mediterranean”, “Virgin Maries of the World”, “Terra Nostra”,
“Sumiglia” and “Tutti baci” released by Lyra and ECM.With the group “Primavera
En Salonico" she has participated in numerous concerts at the most significant
jazz and ethnic festivals around the world.

Authentic and pure, Savina Yannatou’s voice steers a confident course through the labyrinths of that most fragile art vocal performance. Her lyricism opens a portal onto a world which, however similar it may seem, is different.With her, the superb musicians of Primavera en Salonico, a band as close-knit as it is long-standing,
summarize their impressions of the musical journeys they have embarked on over the years in search of songs that call many lands home,some engraved on the collective memory of the Mediterranean,others which have travelled mouth to mouth far from the place of their birth.

Kardeş Türküler (translated Songs of Fraternity) was conceived in 1993 as a
series of concerts given by the music branch of the Folklore Club at Boğaziçi
University in İstanbul, Turkey.
The diverse ethnic groups in this ancient
part of the world initially gave cause for the concerts to have artists perform
interpretations of Anatolian folksongs in Turkish, Arabic, Kurdish, Azerbaijani,
Georgian and Armenian.
Under the auspices of the Boğaziçi Performing Arts
Ensemble (BGST), formed in 1995, the program used the concert stage to advance
the ideals of common ancestry and celebration of diversity as a foil to cultural
polarization and ethnic tension.
Forthwith, the musical heritage of the Laz,
Georgian, Circassian, Roma, Macedonian and Alevi cultures at all were
incorporated into the program.
The scholarly collection and research of the
diverse folklore tradition of the region is an important part of BGST’s
activities, but Kardeş Türküler has been intent on forging its own music
tradition as well.
Fairy HeartMagic finds Gary Stadler back at the piano spinning out lush emotive songs that conjure moonbeams, star-blanketed nights, and enchanted forests. Layers of light synthesizer, Lisa Lynne's dreamy Celtic harp, and the fantasy language lyrics of fine new vocalist Stephannie dance with Stadler's soft-pedaled playing. Fairy HeartMagic, rather than featuring starkly individual pieces, plays more like slightly varied movements of one unified piece, just right for pre-slumber, soft-focus Saturday mornings, or unwinding after a long afternoon. While not written specifically for children, little ones will find this frolicsome but gentle music pleasant to the ears and soothing to the psyche. Stadler, whose songs often begin as bedtime songs for his wife, has composed and arranged a dilly of a lullaby for the magical landscape of vision and reverie.
Lila Downs is a bicultural border-crosser who grew up both in Minnesota and the Sierra Madre mountains and Oaxaca in Mexico. She has a strong interest in Mexico's native cultures; her mother is a Zapotec Indian, and Downs has studied and sung in languages including Zapotec, Nahuatl, Maya and Mixtec. Though as a college student she intended to sing opera, a period of soul-searching (which included following the Grateful Dead around) led her to investigate traditional Mexican music, albeit through a modern, jazz-influenced filter. She toured with bands like los Cadetes de Yodoyuxi and la Trova Serrana, and began to find her signature style when she hooked up with saxophonist Paul Cohen. From 1999's La Sandunga to 2004's Una Sangre: One Blood, Downs has carved a unique niche for herself: an innovator working off of native traditions, she's both a champion of native cultures and a darling of the world music scene.
