Album Review - Kevin Wood ? Kindred

Both in art and in media there is a steady focus on social and cultural differences. It is for some reason more important to describe what makes us different from each other than what makes us similar. The album Kindred by Kevin Wood is a reaction to this. Wood's message is that we all have a lot in common, regardless of race, ethnicity and religion. With this as inspiration, I guess Kevin Wood had to create something truly beautiful. And yes, he did.
Kindred is Kevin Wood?s third album. Fans of his previous albums, Scenic Listening (2002) and Sacred (2005) will feel at home. This time around there are less Gregorian chants, but a more ethnic approach. Wood has his very own style. He uses rich synth pads, a beat box like drum and additional layers of piano, strings and vocals. It is in my opinion exquisite sound design. It's on the brink of perfection. Perhaps it is just me - but I think Wood?s synth and drum arrangement reminds of the intro to Bruce Springsteen?s classic Streets of Philadelphia. It is beautiful music with a hint of melancholy.

Govinda - Entwined And Entranced

Govinda, a.k.a. Shane O'Madden, has a magic touch when blending diverse elements such as guitar, programming, violin, and sarod to create an enticing electronic music with hints of the Middle East, India, and British Isles. "Erotic Mystics" is such an example, with its heavy hip-hop beat below the crying of the sarod and Clarita Sanchez's delicate spoken word. "Aspetta" wraps sounds of Celtica around O'Madden's unadorned vocal callings, while "Next to Godliness" recalls the elevated, vocal praising of Sufi qawwali and ragas. Spanish guitar dominates the album early on with "Quintessence of Dust" and the intriguing "Compassion," a trip-hoppy dance endeavor that's laced with treated voice and electronic programming. "Le Zephyr" somehow manages to make a tinkly piano à la George Winston work with the ethereal soul of Amy Atchley's vocals--again manifesting Govinda's alchemist talents

Richard Warner - Quiet Heart - Spirit Wind

Time will not stand still as you listen to the bamboo and alto flute music of Richard Warner, but it will seem far less relevant as your mind gradually adjusts to the spaciousness and generous silences that adorn the extended notes found in Warner's ethereal improvisations. Urban dwellers should allow themselves a few moments of deep-breathing decompression to detach themselves from their multi- tasking mindsets before tuning in Warner's slow-motion sonic excursions. Otherwise, you may find his music at first to be oddly jarring, so peaceful and gentle is his playing. Yoga adherents and massage enthusiasts should find much to admire in this two-CD set, a remastered repackaging of two releases from 1982's Quiet Heart and 1984's Spirit Wind. The double CD includes four new selections, bringing the set's combined playing time to more than 93 minutes. On the wooden floors beneath giant vaulted ceilings in Seattle's Holy Names Academy, Warner first performed solo, then returned two years later to play with minimal accompaniment from tuned crystal glasses. Both projects, particularly Spirit Wind, succeed by achieving and sustaining moods of stillness and restful clarity that, while well-suited to yoga ideals, can also be appreciated away from the mat. Meditative flute music has the potential to strike Occidental ears as shrill, discordant, brittle, or exotic to the point of distraction. Not so with Warner's projects. He typically avoids piercing high notes and prefers to explore tones in a comfortable mid-range that allow his ambient works, most notably Spirit Wind's 18-minute "Moonlight on the Mountain," to sustain a lovely atmosphere of undisturbed calm.

Glen Velez - Rhythms of the Chakras

Glen Velez, a Texan of Mexican origin, is one of the most outstanding living percussionists. His instrument is the frame drum, the origins of which can be traced back as early as ancient Mesopotamia. Velez not only plays the frame drum, he studied its rich history and manifold uses as a ceremonial instrument in ancient rituals, and thus also became a musicologist in this field. He not only presents his expertise in a wide variety of performances and collaborations with other artists -- he also developed his own teaching method for learning to play the frame drum, creates instructional videos on this method, teaches workshops throughout the world, and publishes books and articles on the subject. He even designed his own frame drum series for REMO, a drum manufacturer. Due to this extensive work, he is to be considered the world's leading expert on this instrument and one of the most innovative fusion musicians, easily crossing borders between rock, jazz, world, classical, and postmodern music. Furthermore, he must be credited with having managed to merge different frame drum playing techniques into a composite approach which basically denotes his own unique style. At the age of seven Glen Velez had been exposed to the wonders of the percussion world by his uncle, a drummer. So the youngster had discovered his passion quite early. His teenage years he spent mostly listening to bebop recordings and trying out different percussion instruments for playing jazz. However, in 1967, at the age of 18, he shifted his interest from jazz percussion to classical percussion and was attracted to the cultural melting pot of New York and enrolled at the Manhattan School of Music to study percussion with Fred Hinger. Hinger introduced him to the idea of circular motion in music as opposed to conventional Western linear progression. Thus, Glen Velez also became acquainted with the music of the two great 20th century composers John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. In order to absorb all the new things he had learned about music at his first stay in New York he decided to return to Dallas in the beginning of 1969 and to practice frantically what he had learned on the East Coast. In the meantime, he also joined the army where he played in a band and continued to refine his percussion skills. In 1973, he was back in New York and started recording with minimalist Steve Reich, performing in his ensemble. This fruitful partnership lasted fifteen years. In the beginning of the '80s, however, Velez became immensely interested in hand drumming, shifted his focus on this specialized field of percussion and discovered the frame drum as his passion. This time period also marks his breakaway from classical percussion; according to his own words, he missed the improvisational element in this field. In 1983, he established contact with Paul Winter and became a member of his Paul Winter Consort, formed in 1967 and one of the first exponents of world music. Besides the work in this group, Glen Velez started to release solo recordings which all feature dazzingly polyrhythmic percussion on the frame drum and a wide variety of other percussion instruments as well as Velez' characteristic overtone singing. His solo debut Handance, recorded with drummer Layne Redmond, was released in 1984. "Handance" is the name Velez gave to his frame drum playing teaching method. This method regards voice and body movements as a unity with the actual frame drum playing; it is demonstrated in the instructional video The Glen Velez Handance Method which he created for teaching purposes. In 1984, Velez signed with the renowned German fusion label CMP Records which he stuck with for the next decade. He continued his collaboration with Layne Redmond on his second solo release, Internal Combustion, from 1985. For Seven Heaven (1987), Velez added the atmospheric Bansuri flute textures of Steve Gorn. John Cage acknowledged Glen Velez' mastery in 1989 by writing the piece "Composed Improvisation for One-sided Drum with or without Jangles" especially for him. In the same year, Velez released the beautiful Assyrian Rose and expanded the colors of his sound worlds by John Clark on French horn and Howard Levy on piano and harmonica. Velez started the '90s with Ramana (1990) and Doctrine of Signatures (1991), the latter recorded without Layne Redmond's support, but Gorn took part again. In 1993, Velez was back with another recording, Border States, which motto might be "complex and spiritual music with simple instruments." Shortly afterwards he released Pan Eros and stopped recording for CMP Records. 1996 was the year of a collaboration with Spanish saxophone and clarinet player Javier Paxariño on his project Temurà as well as Velez' own release Rhythmcolor Exotica which features his newly formed Handance Ensemble. 1998 saw the end of Glen Velez' membership in the Paul Winter Consort. Since then, Velez, who according to his own words never listens to an album he has made, but moves on to the next project, has been working exclusively as a soloist, but carries on to collaborate with a variety of musicians in different genres. These included artists like singer/songwriter Suzanne Vega, fusion guitarist Pat Metheny, classical clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, Indian tabla player Zakir Hussain, and Swedish jazz bassist Jonas Hellborg. Rhythm of the Chakras, subtitled "Drumming for the Body's Energy Centers" and released the same year, was the result of Velez' study of Indian chakras, focal points of bodily and psychic interaction in Hinduism and Buddhism, and their attempted transformation to music. In 1999 Glen Velez was voted Best World Beat Percussionist by DRUM! magazine. One year later, he released Breathing Rhythms. Like its predecessor, the album continues to explore music as a spiritual and healing force, an understanding which the "shaman with a briefcase" (Paul Winter) has gained after many years of studying percussion music as an ancient heritage and a medium for self-exploration.

Ghazal - Moon Rise Over the Silk Road

This is the third collaboration between Kayhan Kalhor, the Iranian kamancheh (a vertical, four-string fiddle) player, and Shujaat Husain Khan, a sitar virtuoso. Kalhor in particular has made great inroads in Europe and America, bringing the music of Iran to listeners who would never have known about it, in no small part because of Ghazal. The idea behind this duo's work is to bring together two rather disparate classical traditions, Persian and Hindustani. The results are mixed. The casual listener will find this music interesting and approachable. Those who appreciate complex improvisation will find the talents of these two artists irresistible. Those who are well versed in either Persian or Indian music, however, may find that the improvisations wander a bit too much, having solid roots in neither tradition. Many may find Kalhor's solo recording, Scattering Stars Like Dust, to be far more satisfying.

Joan Osborne - Christmas Means Love

Christmas Means Love follows in the tradition of How Sweet It Is, Osborne's album of soul covers: Backed by a rootsy blues band and, on some songs, a female chorus, she sings her heart out. Or maybe she's just singing with her heart out, with direct emotion. Osborne's no show-off: She avoids superfluous pyrotechnics in favor of deep-pocket soul grooves that let these songs and carols simmer and smolder. On the airy "Christmas in New Orleans," Osborne is lighthearted and intimate, backed by acoustic guitars and a jazzy harmonica. On "Cherry Tree Carol" and "Children Go Where I Send Thee," she slips into gospel mode, the former song accented with slide guitar and organ, the latter with a slinky, swampy electric groove that nods to the Staple Singers. One minute, she's playing it straight and somber on the beautifully spare "Angels We Have Heard On High"; the next, she's sassy and sexy on the country blues of "What Do Bad Girls Get?" Jia Peng Fang - Moonlight

After launching a successful career in a 1960s Japanese rock and roll band, Osamu Kitajima decided to go solo and explore the ancient instruments of Japan, such as the koto. Since then he has moved to America and completed at least 9 albums...He artfully blends the ancient musical traditions of Japan with contemporary instruments, creating his own distinctive fusion of East and West. He is an award-winning composer of music for commercials, video, television and film in the U.S. and Japan.
This Asian artist specializes in the niko, a Chinese stringed instrument which is said to resemble the range and sounds of the human voice. His music can be heard on two albums from Pacific Moon Records, River,
which was released in 1999, and Rainbow, which followed a year later.

Love Peace and Poetry - Turkish Psychedelic Music

The music that would come from Turkey would blend European and Asian influences unique to that country and essential to the cultural synthesis of Turkish folk and Western rock music that emerged in 1967-1968. The great Delta blues players like Robert Johnson created music with one acoustic guitar in much the same way that traditional türkü arrangements were played originally on one saz (traditional Turkish instrument). If you consider the ways in which classic Delta blues songs were later given electric rock arrangements by musicians like John Mayall, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones and others you will have a fuller understanding of the Turkish rock/pop music of this era. Artists featured include: Mogollar (described as "Anadolu pop" or "Anatolian pop" -- the essence of the ancient and mystical soul of Turkish folk music; known as the "Turkish Pink Floyd"); Selda (politically-themed music, a transformation of traditional Turkish folk music and poetry into more contemporary rock-based music similar to the transformation of traditional folk-blues in the West); Özdemir Erdogan (well-known jazz guitarist, vocalist and arranger; his track was originally a well-known türkü by Asik Veysel, one of the most revered Turkish folk poets); Erkin Koray (the most psychedelic Turkish rocker ever, made his best recordings between 1970 and 1974 -- the song here was recorded in 1971 with his band, Erkin Koray Supergroup). Edip Akbayram (a türkü arranger and singer -- one of the last examples of the best Turkish rock music of the 1960s-1970s, as there was a definite shift away from those traditions after the beginning of the 1980s). Cem Karaca (another important rock singer known for his political stance); Üç Hürel (Turkish rock group formed in 1970 by three brothers; unique for designing their own instruments: drums created from traditional Turkish percussion instruments, a double-necked stringed creation that had an electric saz on one half and an electric guitar on the other); Bülent Ortaçgil (songwriter and singer who released his debut LP in1974, an album which has become a Turkish pop classic recently reissued on CD; Ortaçgil is unique because of the absence of Eastern influences in his music, sounding more Western as a result). Felix Maria Woschek & Friends - Gospodi The Light Of Christ

Felix Maria Woschek is a true world-musician. He has managed to interpret afresh the most beautiful Spirituals in the world, for European ears. When he sings Indian bhajans or the mantra songs of Jews and Sufis, listeners cannot help but open their hearts and join in the singing. This unusual musician places his music in the service of religious spirituality, but without favouring any one religion in the process. Woschek carries his listeners away into the spheres of Indian religiosity with mantra-like singing. He aims to create a mood jointly with his audience so that they can absorb the depths of his melodies of the heart, as he calls his songs, and can allow them to continue to resonate within them in tranquillity and in the musical pauses. Woschek invokes these notes as if from other spheres, as if they were being created not in his vocal chords but from the space surrounding him. He allows gentle sounds to swell up and mingle with other sounds so that he can send them back into the space they came from and listen to them reverberating away. He allows sound to be sound, and does not falsify it with too many complex surrounding sound formations. Their quality, in his view, comes from their being so light and so simple. For all their simplicity, his songs are full of variety, ranging from Gregorian chant in the pentatonic scale to Jewish songs and Islamic hymns. Old Testament psalms also form part of his wide-ranging repertoire. This artist succeeds in creating understanding between religions, and in opening people's hearts towards other cultures. In his songs, every note lives its own life and at the same time lives for the piece as a whole. Woschek takes time and allows a note to swell up slowly, and then die away again. His music thus takes on a very spatial effect, so that the listener genuinely feels surrounded by gentle sounds. He himself seems to tremble, in body, mind, and spirit, in harmony with his music while he is singing or playing his many different instruments. With Woschek, even the silence into which he releases the notes - and which is never interrupted by applause - takes on a special significance. He believes that it is an integral and elemental part of the music. "The divine reveals itself in silence," he explains. He brings the various world religions together in his music, and believes that they all exist together as one entity. His repertoire thus includes Buddhist mantras, Gregorian chant, and Indian and Jewish folk music. Despite his spiritual subject, Woschek remains very free, so that his guests can easily be carried along in the joy of joining in the singing.

Chet Baker - Plays Billie Holiday

BAKER'S HOLIDAY is an endearing and smoky tribute to singing legend Billie Holiday. Backed by a smartly arranged reed section, Chet Baker and his quartet swing with great dynamism on all 10 tracks. Jimmy Mundy's arrangements give this album the feel of a 1940's big band, and Baker seems comfortable recreating some of the mystique and elegance of a bygone era.
On this album, Baker plays only the flugelhorn; the instrument's dark and mellow tone only adds to Baker's already wistful sense of melodiousness. We hear this most poignantly on "Don't Explain," a composition co-written by Billie Holiday herself. Here, Baker mournfully "sings" the melody on his horn, while an English horn echoes him hauntingly. Baker sings on four of the 10 tracks, and his boyish, soft-spoken singing style is right at home with these classic tunes. Here, without copying Holiday, Baker through his elusive musical genius conjures her magic.

Baker's Holiday finds Chet Baker effectively paying tribute to Billie Holiday with mellow trumpet solos and occasional vocals.
Baker is backed by a full sax section and a four-piece rhythm section that includes pianist Hank Jones;
Jimmy Mundy contributed the colorful arrangements. His performance of ten songs associated with Lady Day (most of which he had not recorded previously) is often exquisite.

Ryan Farish - Beautiful

Review
Ryan Farish in his first commercial release "Beautiful" creates a portfolio of sound and emotion a fan of the Electronic & New Age genre will want to make a pillar of his personal collection for years to come. Unlike many first albums, "Beautiful" should be more aptly labeled a "greatest hits" release because every track from one to fourteen is a masterpiece of sound and production.
The CD case itself is a work of art, sporting a clean, high-quality cardboard fold-out instead of the traditional (and cheap) Jewel-case plastic with paper insert. With the vision of a beautiful seashore at dusk dominating its cover, both inside and out, the CD itself blends into the background, creating a level of quality typically seen in high-dollar commercial releases. With above average quality CD packaging, "Beautiful" is a bargain at the listing price. I highly recommend it for music collectors who cherish the visual beauty of their discs.

Although every track is amazing, I have a few personal favorites. "Chasing The Sun" (Track 3) is a tune I can't get out of my head. A modern electronic melody is coupled with a creative piano interlude that is quite uplifting. "Full Sail" (Track 8) could easily have knocked off James Horner as the lead for the "Titanic" soundtrack. The mood is inspiring, the song crisp... "Secret Garden" (Track 9) is a unique, one-of-a-kind musical experience, with modern keyboard strokes to excite the listener. The song could easily fit into an Apple commercial, and most reminds me of the scene in "Real Genius" where Val Kilmer sneaks into the top secret military plane to tamper with its laser circuitry. Last but not least, "Holding Faith" (Track 12) is an energetic synergy of sounds most reminiscent of Vangelis and "Chariots of Fire".

If you enjoy Vangelis, Yanni, Enya, or the Electronic / New Age genres in general, you will be floored by Ryan Farish's "Beautiful", for "Beautiful" is truly perfect...

Kevin Kern - Imagination's Light

"Imagination's Light" was partly inspired by pianist/composer Kevin Kern's childhood experience of sitting in a darkened room lit only by firelight, letting his imagination guide his fingers on the piano keyboard. Kern continues this tradition by dimming the lights in the recording studio and spontaneously creating the solo piano tracks for his recordings. Legally blind from birth, it is fascinating that darkness is such an important part of the creative process for this outstanding composer. That process and an incredibly lyrical Steinway Hamburg concert grand gave birth to a gorgeous, shimmering collection of the gentle and delicate pieces Kern is known and loved for around the world. The warmth and beauty of the piano is accompanied on several tracks by Mike Miller on acoustic guitar and Terry Miller on acoustic and electric bass. Several tracks are solo piano (always my favorites!), and the only weakness in this recording is the canned strings, which sound flat and mechanical paired with the clarity and sparkle of the piano and guitars. That's a small thing in the context of the whole album, and the strings appear on only a few of the tracks where they are noticeable. Otherwise, this album is stellar!

The CD opens with a beautiful piece called "Remembering the Light," which is mostly solo piano. The dreamy flow of the piano is contrasted in parts by the crisp but gentle acoustic guitar. The strings on this piece actually add some pastel washes that soften the piano a bit and further enhance the wistfulness of the piece. "Safe In Your Embrace" is more of a duet for guitar and piano, with the two instruments taking turns with the melody. "Pearls of Joy" is one of my favorites. A piano solo, most of the piece is played in the upper registers of the piano and is in a minor mode that tugs at the emotions. Poignant is putting it mildly, and I think this is one of Kern's best pieces to date. One of the surprises on the album is an incredible interpretation of Sting's "Fields of Gold." The guitar has a very big part in this arrangement, with piano and acoustic bass creating the backdrop for Mike Miller's exquisite finger work. The arrangement is simple, clean, and full of passion. Great job, guys! "Keepers of the Flame" is another wonderful piano solo. The melody is bittersweet and full of yearning. "Musings" again brings the guitar to the forefront, taking turns with the piano with the melody. It's a gorgeous piece, but the background strings seem to weigh it down - the sensitive interaction of piano and guitar is perfect without the additional accompaniment. "Sweet Dreams, Helena" has a very Asian flavor, indicating that Kern's overwhelmingly successful concert tours in Asia have had an influence on his music. The CD closes with another piano solo, "And The Light Is Forever," which I also think is one of Kern's most beautiful pieces ever. Soulful and reflective, the piece feels intimate and deeply personal as it reaches to the heart.

Kevin Kern - Embracing The Wind

Embracing the Wind, is a collection of inspired emotional themes, deftly articulated through soft piano, warm rhythms, and acoustic guitar. The opening track, "Blossom on the Wind," begins with the gentle sound of a raindrop, a single note of stillness that sets the mood of this effort. For this particular work, Kern and producer Terence Yallop returned to the original source of their inspiration, the piano itself. With a tape continually running to capture each moment of expression, Kern and Yallop tapped into their own familiar wellspring of feeling, from the uplifting "Bathed in Dawn's Light," to the passionate "From This Day Forward," a piece that Kern composed for his fiancé in honor of their wedding day. While Embracing the Wind is a reflection of Kern's self-described "musical journey" through a myriad of influences, it maintains a classic simplicity of sound and arrangement built around a well-balanced framework of song structures. It's plain to see that he's grown considerably out of the first wobbling steps of New Age music into his own right as a composer and a pianist. Embracing the Wind is Kern's own acknowledgement of his coming-of-age as an artist, and like most things that get better with time, "Embracing the Wind" is to be savored slowly, appreciated newly again with each listen

Beirut - The Flying Club Cup

Beirut is Zach Condon, a 21-yearold prodigy from New Mexico who has never been to the Lebanese capital, nor even the Balkans, the region whose gipsy folk sound coloured his remarkable debut album, Gulag Orkestar.
On the latter Condon's whimsically named band worked up their rhythmic clangour with the help of borrowings from Balkan gipsy brass. I don't mean Slavic street theatre like Gogol Bordello, but the more subtle approach of bands such Kocani Orkestar, from Macedonia.
On the CD -- recorded at his parents' house in New Mexico -- Zach Condon sounded like a pretentious trust-fund boy gatecrashing an Emir Kusturica film set, but there was no doubting his talent. By the end of the year, Beirut had become one of the most compelling bands around.
Having rambled through lo-fi electronica, doo-wop and Balkan folk music, Zach now attempts to conjure a feel of France in an album inspired by an old photo of hot air balloonists setting off from the Eiffel Tower. The horns and fiddles remain but now Beirut seem fuelled by vin rouge and absinthe as Condon's muse moves on to France. The gusto with which he tackles his theme is infectious, and it is hard to be cynical when the clichés come packaged so elegantly. Queasy accordions, fruity brass and rustic percussion do the job nicely, but this is an album of wispy moods and atmospheres rather than a collection of songs you could really take to your heart.
Wary of accusations of being a mere pastiche merchant, this time France being the theme -- at least he has lived in Paris -- this means waltzing accordions and horns, plucked strings and Condon's tremulous voice , a dramatic, stirring sound that is miles away from anything else coming out of the North American indie scene. Because a piano accompanies the ballad "Un Dernier Verre" and because Condon has expressed admiration for Jacques Brel, some American fans think "The Flying Club Cup" a portrait of France or, more dimly, "Europe". This is a misapprehension. Condon picks up traditional elements and remakes them. If you cram an accordion, guitar, violin, double bass, drums and three pieces of brass into a narrow stairwell, as Zach Condon does in the video for "Nantes", the term "layered" is inadequate to describe the consequent sound.The tense piano loops of "In The Mausoleum" and fluttering flutes of the title track stand out on an album that entirely succeeds in its goal of whisking the listener to an enticing new places.

Ali Akbar Moradi, Pejman Hadadi - Samae Mastaneh

Teheran-based Ali-Akbar Moradi is considered a virtuoso on the tanbur, a plucked string instrument with a pear–shaped belly fashioned from a single piece of mulberry wood. The tanbur has always been considered a sacred instrument associated with the Kurdish Sufi music of Western Iran. Moradi is accompanied by Pejman Hadadi, the finest Irnanian percussionist living in America, who plays the daf, a large frame drum covered with goat skin with rows of metal rings jangling about on the inside. He also plays the tombak, which is similar to a dumbek but made also from solid mulberry wood. Its warm tone complements the rapid strumming and plucking on the banjo-like tanbur. This recording was made during a 1999 U.S. tour and, in a word, these duets are extraordinary. Having performed together only three times previously, Moradi and Hadadi play entirely improvisational Kurdish music on this date, presenting their amazing skills as one triumphant spirit. Moroccan Spirit

The lush Moroccan Spirit emphasizes music's meditative qualities, but this imaginative mix of traditional and modern also works on a less contemplative level. The Brave--the guy behind Sacred Spirit, Indigo Spirit, and B-Tribe--traveled throughout Morocco over a five-year period with a microphone and a tape recorder, capturing the essence of both the Arab and Berber cultures. He then wove these disparate musical threads into a cohesive multicultural musical fabric using unobtrusive electronic beats and studio programming. There's even a bit of electronic groove on some of the more upbeat tracks. "Jim I Nim" and "La Mamounia" crackle with the vitality of traditional Moroccan dance music, but could easily work at hip world-music-friendly nightclubs. Mellow highlights include the somber "Music for 1001 Nights: Outro" and "Moroccan Soul," which is propelled by soulful women singers. The album's not as challenging as the more radical hybrids using North African music, but Moroccan Spirit is far more than mere background noise
