Herbie Mann - Plays The Roar... Today

Flutist Herbie Mann has always had wide interests in music. For this hard-to-find LP he is joined by three brass, vibraphonist Dave Pike, bassist Earl May, drummer Bruno Carr and percussionist Patato Valdes (with arrangements by Oliver Nelson) for a wide-ranging program that includes two Beatles songs, a selection from Burt Bacharach and two ancient pieces by Duke Ellington ("Creole Love Call" and "The Mooche"). In general Mann plays quite well but there is little memorable about this generally commercial effort.

Herbie Mann - Yardbird Suite

Herbert Jay Solomon (April 16, 1930 – July 1, 2003), better known as Herbie Mann, was an American jazz flautist and important early practitioner of world music. Early in his career, he also played saxophones and clarinets (including bass clarinet), but Mann was among the first jazz musicians to specialize on the flute and was perhaps jazz music's preeminent flautist during the 1960s.
Mann was an early pioneer in the fusing of jazz and world music. He incorporated elements of African music in 1959 following a State Department sponsored tour of the continent, adding a conga player to his band, and the same year recorded Flautista, an album of Afro-Cuban jazz. In 1961 Mann took a tour of Brazil and returned to the United States to record with Brazilian players including Antonio Carlos Jobim and guitarist Baden Powell. These albums helped popularize the bossa nova. Many of his albums throughout his career returned to Brazilian themes. He went on to record reggae in London (in 1974), Middle Eastern (1966 and 1967) (with oud and dumbek), and Eastern European styles.
In the mid-1960s Mann hired a young Chick Corea to play in some of his bands, still with a Latin tinge. His work with Corea has been released on the compilation Complete Latin Band Sessions. In the late 1970s, early 1980s Mann played duets at New York City's Bottom Line and the Village Gate to sold out crowds with the late Sarod virtuso Vasant Rai.

Rumeli Türküler - Rumeli Türküleri II

Rumeli Türküsü is a term referring to the light urban style Turkish folk music from Thrace (türkü means Turkish folk song). Songs of this genre are composed within the scales and melodic progression of the classical makam system. Since the 17th century, some of the most distinguished composers of Ottoman classical tradition have written light tunes in the form of türkü, forming a bridge between the élite and popular taste. When incorporating two original Rumeli Türküsü (Gidem Dedim Yârenlerim Darildi and Bulut Gelir Seher ile) into this piece, I took Turkish scholar/composer Yalçin Tura’s harmonization techniques as a role model. This piece was written for my dear friend, wonderful musician and Indian bansuri virtuoso, Deepak Ram.

Vikki Carr - Love Story & Superstar

Born in El Paso, Texas, and raised in the San Gabriel Valley of California, Vikki Carr, the eldest of seven children, began performing at the tender age of four singing Adeste Fidelis in Latin at a Christmas program. She was signed to a contract with Liberty Records in 1961. She recorded He 's A Rebel, which first became a hit in Australia. That title was soon followed by the unforgettable release, It Must Be Him, which charged up the charts in England. One year later, the single was released in the United States and earned Carr four Grammy Award nominations. The international hit emerged again when she and the song were featured in the storyline of the Academy Award winning movie Moonstruck. After It Must Be Him came a string of hits including With Pen In Hand, for which she received her fourth Grammy Award nomination, The Lesson, Can't Take My Eyes Off of You, For Once in My Life and Eternity.

Rajery, Ballake Sissoko, Driss El Maloumi - 3 MA

Three great artists who come from across Africa, from the "3Mas": Madagascar, Mali and Maroc (Morocco). They are all exponents of stringed instruments that played a crucial role in their countries before the arrival of the guitar, and this gently exquisite set explores the links between their styles. Mali's Ballaké Sissoko is the best-known of the three; he ranks alongside his friend Toumani Diabaté as one of the finest kora players in the world. He's joined here by Driss el Maloumi on the north African/Middle Eastern oud, and Rajery, a master of the valiha, which is a tubular zither constructed around a hollowed piece of bamboo and one of the national instruments of Madagascar. There are occasional vocals, such as some cheerful scat from Rajery, and virtuoso solo tracks from all three, including a rhythmic workout from El Maloumi. But what makes this set special are the collaborations and interplay between the musicians, as they switch between lead work and gently sturdy backing, on stately or reflective tracks that echo their backgrounds, from the Sahara to the Indian Ocean.

Kasbah Rockers With Bill Laswell

Kasbah Rockers is the new project of Pat Jabbar and different guests from the Barraka label, having combined chilling Trip Hop beats, Rai’n’B, Dub and progressive Dance sounds with traditional Moroccan influences and instruments. Bill Laswell who is playing the bass on 11 tracks, grooves along with eclectic artists such as Youssef El Mejjad from Amira Saqati (Marrakech-Morocco), Abdelaziz Lamari and Abdelkader Belkacem from Maghrebika (Oran & Skikda-Algeria) or Kadir & Erdem from the Swiss-Turkish Hip Hop crew Makale. Their distinctive musical identities, are all fully integrated. For instance to the improvised recording sessions of the “bad girls” from B-Net Marrakech, or to the great and evocative voice of the young Turkish singer Oezlem Ylmaz. Another new artistic discovery were Hamza & Anass, the two brothers from the crew HS, rappin’ in French and Arabic about Moroccan street reality or moral and social issues.
The lyrical content of most of the other songs is much committed to the daily examinations of young Muslims in the western world, or on the other hand, to the confrontation with “western values” in an Islamic world.
Anti Iraq-war song “Falludjah Car” is sung in Turkish and Arabic, “Bledstyle” in Turkish only. But also more romantic lyrics as in “Shta” do aerate the whole atmosphere

Khamis El Fino - Music For The Classical Oud

The Oud virtuoso, Khamis El Fino has concertized throughout the Far East and Middle East for the past seventeen years. He has appeared as a performing artist in India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Thailand, Japan and the United States.
Born in El Raml, Alexandria, Egypt, and a graduate of Cairo conservatory, Professor, El Fino taught at Conservatories in Cairo and Alexandria. His compositions have been performed on radio in India, Egypt, Iran and Iraq, and at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. His songs have been commissioned by vocal artists in the Middle East.
Professor El Fino is unrivaled in the field of Arabic music for his "Taksimes" (slow, free-rhythm improvisations) and for his inventiveness and skill in "Tagheer" - changing from one Nagham (tonal scale) to another, thus bringing the listener from mood to mood, evoking an emotional response which can be felt even by the totally Western ear.
This recording was made during a concert at Asia House on December 1, 1963, for the Society for Asian Music.

Brian Tyler - Partition

After completing Annapolis and Fast and The Furious:Tokyo Drift, Brian Tyler started work on this score. Partition tells the story of two people from different religious backgrounds falling in love with each other amongst the backdrop of communal riots and post-colonialism. It is relieving to hear Tyler go back to what made him so popular in 2003, a stunning combination of epic film scoring and world music experimentation. At a whopping 78 minutes of score, Partition sweeps the listener to an exotic world without utilizing tired pop song cliche's or loud orchaestral waltzes highly derivative of classic works. It would have been too easy for Tyler to dip into melodrama with the love story presented but here he provides the story with beauty, ethnic appreciation, and respect that it deserves. This is a score worth picking up if you are a film score collector, a fan of Brian Tyler since his breakout score Children of Dune in 2003, or appreciate a soothing listening experience.
