Sabah Fakhri – Live

Posted By Demnagirl On Monday, March 30, 2009 0 comments
Sabah Fakhri born 1933 is an iconic Arabic traditional singer from Aleppo, Syria.
Over the past 50 years of fame and popularity as a singer, Fakhri modified and popularized the then-fading form of traditional Arabic music, Muwashahat and Koodood. He is well known for his exceptionally powerful voice, impeccable execution of Maqamat and harmony, as well as charismatic performances. To many music admirers around the world, he represents the epitome and essence of authentic Arabic Tarab. ”

Fanfare Ciocarlia - Gili Garabdi - Ancient Secrets Of Gypsy Brass

Posted By Demnagirl On Monday, March 30, 2009 1 comments

Fanfare Ciocarlia, whose members vary greatly in age, is one of the last and
best of it's kind. The band doesn't grate on the ears the way some New Orleans
Brass bands tend to do after a while, and it's repertoire and arrangements sound
more diverse. Rather, it comes across as a Gipsy/Klezmer band without strings
and bellows, and as one that can play, at breakneck speed without missing a
step.'

Abdel Halim Hafez - Part1

Posted By Demnagirl On Monday, March 30, 2009 0 comments
Despite a fairly short career, singer/movie-actor Hafez was one of the most
influential Egyptian stars of the 1950s and '60s. His mellow, resonant voice,
subtle vocal style and notably clean intonation marked him out, along with a
liking for long, seemingly endless musical phrases. When Mohamed Abdel Wahhaab
switched from singing to composition, he pretty much stepped into his shoes.
Born in 1929, Abdel Halim studied at Cairo's Institute of Arabic Music and the
Higher Institute for Theatre Music, and began his career teaching and playing
oboe before taking aim at vocal stardom. His first hit came in 1951, and he soon
signed a contract with Abdel Wahhaab to sing his songs and appear in his films.
During the 1960s, he started to sing colloquial poetry more colorful and
meaningful and nearer to popular folk song than ordinary pop songs, and his work
on these lines had a significant influence on popular song in general. He
cofounded a film company and the Saut el-Fann record label in the early '60s,
and remained a major star until he died in 1977 of Bilharzia, which he had
caught as a child and which had begun to affect him intermittently from 1955
onward.

Toufic Farroukh - Tootya

Posted By Demnagirl On Friday, March 27, 2009 0 comments
On its own terms, Lebanese saxophonist Toufic Farroukh's Tootya is largely a success. What it seeks to be is a sophisticated—and at times pretentious—mash-up of Arabic popular and light-classical music with techno beats, Western pop, and a little Latin jazz, presumably targeted at upper middle class listeners in the Middle East and their brothers and sisters in the worldwide diaspora.

It's perhaps more interesting to listen to Tootya as a jazz album, if for no other reason than that Farroukh bursts out in the middle of the rather slick opener, "Systole Diastole," with an angular solo that sounds a shade like Sonny Fortune on Miles Davis' Agharta (CBS, 1975). As a jazz record, the surest reference point for this release is another Miles Davis record with a similar-sounding title: Tutu (Warner Bros., 1986).

With Tutu, Tootya shares lush production values and an unabashedly populist sentiment (this is not the earnest, acoustic Arabic jazz fusion you will hear elsewhere), as well as an '80s-era light funk beat. As with the Davis record, Farroukh's album is saved from descending into tasteful but ultimately hollow easy listening by unexpectedly strong solos (like those of flutist Magic Malik) and an energized mixing of styles. Farroukh's stylistic palette is, if anything, more audaciously broad ranging than even Davis', a fact highlighted by the album's recording locations in both Beirut and Paris.

Especially strong are the gloriously large-scale songs performed by vocalist Rima Khcheich, particularly "Elhob ?!"—a tribute to legendary Egyptian vocalist Oum Kalthoum. The number is based on Ehyptian composer Baligh Hamdi's "El Hob Koullo" and features Bruno Caviglia on delightfully loud rock 'n roll guitar.

The fast Arabic funk of "Scarecrow and peacock," in addition to a good oud line and a fine flute solo by Malik, offers a choir singing what sounds uncannily like Ray Charles' "Hit the Road, Jack." (How could it be? Then again, how could it not be?)

Mandalay - Solace

Posted By Demnagirl On Thursday, March 26, 2009 0 comments
Mandalay's "Solace" is the sort of album that takes awhile to sink into your consciousness -- it's ethereal, bittersweet and full of Nicola Hitchcock's sweetly airy vocals. the songs are a slice of trip-hop heaven.
The tone is set with the trip-hop/piano ballad, "Not Seventeen," a wistful ballad that slips into the slightly trippier breakup song "Like Her." Smooth, soft soundscapes are the base of all the songs -- almost all ballads, with a few bouncier trip-hop songs mixed in there. Among the following songs are the smooth "Beautiful" (most recently covered by Sarah Brightman), the poppy "It's Enough Now," wispy "Enough Love," and the eerie, spacey "Flowers Bloom."
There's something very soothing and sweet about Mandalay. The trancey trip-hop mixes mellow and moody, with the occasional dose of organic instrumentation to keep it from getting dull. The first disc isn't the sort of thing you dance to, but rather drowse to on an autumn evening. The second... well, you can dance to it,
Mandalay's music is as beautiful and light as a glass butterfly, and "Solace" is a solid collection of songs and remixes.

Les Elgart - Just One More Dance

Posted By Demnagirl On Wednesday, March 25, 2009 0 comments
Along with his brother Larry, trumpeter Les Elgart led one of the more popular swing orchestras of the '50s. His smooth, tightly arranged sound helped keep the declining big band style alive on the charts for a little while longer, and his later reunions with Larry often produced stylistic detours into contemporary easy listening trends. Elgart was born August 3, 1917, in New Haven, CT, to parents who both played the piano; he took up the trumpet in his early teens and was already performing professionally by the time he turned 20. During the early '40s, Elgart performed in orchestras led by Raymond Scott, Charlie Spivak, and Harry James, among others, and sometimes wound up in the same groups as his sax-playing brother, Larry. The two formed their own orchestra in 1945, and hired top-notch arrangers like Nelson Riddle, Ralph Flanagan, and Bill Finegan. However, a number of factors conspired against them: the Musicians' Union recording strike, the declining popularity of live swing music, conflicts over leadership, and the end of World War II. They wound up disbanding in 1946, and Les and Larry went their separate ways, making a living as freelancers in whatever orchestras could pay them. ”

Toufic Farroukh - Little Secrets

Posted By Demnagirl On Wednesday, March 25, 2009 0 comments
Toufic Farroukh is a saxophone player and composer of jazz with a middle-eastern flavour stemming from his bi-cultural roots in Lebanon and France.
His brother was a saxophone player and he’s the one who guided him to this instrument and taught him its ABCs. He was an amateur who instilled in Toufic the love of professionalism. They had discovered the saxophone in the Boy Scouts. The instrument was strange to their environment; unconventional, and used only for certain occasions.
A good friend, Issam Hage Ali, and Toufic did pretty good work on this instrument and through it, the bond of their friendship strengthened and they became more like brothers. Music was their solace during the bloody events. It was a real flight from the horrors of the time.
When he moved from Beirut to Paris , where he studied music in the conservatory and in the Advanced College of Music, saxophone was his first goal. His familiarity with it emerged through modern music, particularly the alto saxophone. As for the modern classical music, except Ravel and the French composer Claude Debussy, who introduced the saxophone in some of their rare works, this instrument was not used by classical musical orchestras. When we say modern music, he presuppose the music that was written in the 20th century for a saxophone and orchestra or saxophone and piano. After the 1950s, writing for the saxophone increased significantly.
In fact, he did not study jazz and its roots at all, nor played jazz on the saxophone. Despite what he learned from the musical institutions in Paris , he is still a self-made musician, who learned and composes by himself. He went searching with this instrument and found that the love he has for it brings out dormant obsessions in him. None of the other musicians were able help him express them as he wished. Since then, he started writing my music.

Toufic Farroukh - Drab Zeen

Posted By Demnagirl On Wednesday, March 25, 2009 0 comments
Reviews. . . Right up there with Dhaffer Youssef and Claude Chalhoub. More dance/trance/club-oriented than the above musicians, he nevertheless presents a very strong effort in the tricky cross-cultural world of Nu Arab jazz beat. I originally thought I liked the remixed version of his previous effort, Ali on Broadway, better than this disc, but I've changed my mind.
Drab Zeen represents one of the finest examples of this important emerging new sub-genre, Arab-jazz. The genius of this disc is how Farroukh has effortlessly melded such disparate elements as jazz trombone and saxophone, chill-beats, French vocals, acoustic piano, oud, ney, and accordion into a singly tapestry of unique sounds, all the while retaining the essential elements of each instrumental voice even as he transforms the whole into something entirely new and heretofore unheard.
Farroukh has grown in every facet of his music-making: tighter and more evocative compositions, a richer and more varied sound palette, cleaner production, superior sax blowing, and a deeper groove.
An altogether remarkable disc.

Lotfi Bouchnak

Posted By Demnagirl On Wednesday, March 25, 2009 2 comments
The Tunisian singer, oud player, and composer Lotfi Bouchnak is one of Tunisia's most famous musicians. His repertoire includes both classical Arabic songs, which are mostly forgotten even in his homeland, and popular genres. He has an impressively powerful voice that makes it possible for him to produce many variants and modulations. This enables him to reinterpret his famous predecessors, like Sayesd Darwish, Zakariya Ahmad, and Salah Abdel Hay. But Lotfi Bouchnak has also had success with his own works.
