Emad Sayyah - Modern Belly Dance From Lebanon .Sunset Princess

There is a booming industry in belly dancing music. Much of it is of questionable authenticity, but it can still be fun. The industry is not supported by men eager to watch belly dancing, but rather by women who practice belly dancing for its spiritual and physical benefits. Lebanon's Emad Sayyah is a one-man belly dance music factory. On this disc, which is at least his fifth from ARC, he writes and arranges all the music, plays all the instruments except percussion, and sings. Although the percussion, ably served up by Abdo Manssour, is played on traditional instruments and uses mostly traditional rhythms, the music and other instruments can best be described as ersatz. This quality is most apparent on "Jibaal Wa Widyaan (Mountains and Valleys)," which sounds like music you'd hear on the calliope at the circus. Sayyah makes use of Western instruments like the saxophone, violin, and (gasp!) synthesizer. He avoids the quarter-tone scales typical of Middle-Eastern music. Also, he often uses melodic structures more typical of Western music; actually, what he usually presents is a Western-friendly stereotype of Arabic music, something like what you'd expect to hear in a cartoon of Bugs Bunny visiting the Casbah. But it's pointless to criticize musicians like Sayyah: What people want from him is a good rhythms and a Middle-Eastern "feel," and these he provides

Harem II (Time of Rhythm)

Harem is definitely *not* your stereotypical Middle Eastern percussion band. They openly experiment with blending Middle Eastern music and Western, and the results are nothing short of stupendous!

The instruments and rhythms are familiar, but are used in new and creative ways. Add to this the fact that the musicians are all first-rate, and you have music with an energy that's been missing from Middle Eastern music.


I like the fact the group has incorporated a couple of "straight traditional" pieces in the CD, and am constantly impressed by their musical ability. Fantastic!

Those who attempt to dance to this music are going to find it requires being able to think "outside the box" - Way beyond the reach of the average belly dancer. Not because the instruments and the rhythms are unfamiliar, but because the music is so innovative, so *fresh*!

Tabla Beat Science - Tala Matrix

The North Indian drums know as the tabla were said to have been invented in the 13th century by Amir Khusrau, a disciple of the Sufi saint Hazrat Nizemuddin Aluya. At the time, Khusrau sawed a pakhawaj (a single two-headed wooden drum) in two. Though no one may never know exactly why Khusrau felt it necessary it to saw a pakhawaj in half, his act gave birth to the tabla. Since that time, the tabla have been conceived to accompany vocalists and such instruments as the sitar (a multi-stringed lute), bin (a seven-stringed tube zither), venu (a side-blown cane flute), saord (a lute with a parchment soundboard and metal frets), and the sarangi (bowed lute).

The late Ustad Alla Rakha, who played for many years with Ravi Shankar, is widely credited with having expanded the repertoire and the role of the tabla. Thanks in great part to his ingenuity and determination, today the tabla is no longer considered to be merely an accompanying instrument. In honor of his impressive contributions to the world of tabla, the musical consortium known as Tabla Beat Science has dedicated their debut CD, Tabla Matrix, to the memory of Ustad Alla Rakha. By asking some of the most highly regarded tabla players in the world to play with a variety of musicians and programmers, producer and bassist Bill Laswell has essentially appropriated the ancient tradition of the tabla and fused it with contemporary electronica studio wizardry. Tabla Beat Science is comprised of Ustad Alla Rakha's son and tabla superman Zakir Hussain, venerated sarangi player Ustad Sultan Khan, Indian and jazz percussion innovator Trilok Gurtu, New York drummer Karsh Kale, bass and drum visionary Talvin Singh, music programmer Brad Somatik, and producer/bassist Bill Laswell. An innovative and creative union of musicians, Tabla Beat Science pushes the envelope of traditional tabla playing and, perhaps more importantly, breathes fresh air into electronica by introducing traditional acoustic virtuosity into the mix. The collective recorded an August 2001 performance and released it as the double-disc Live in San Francisco at Stern Grove album in 2002.

Luscious - The Bellydance Workout For Beginners DVD

"Luscious" is a terrific bellydance instruction DVD geared towards beginners, though intermediate students may enjoy and learn from it too, as Neon, Blanca, and Sarah are superb dancers and teachers, and the choreography is varied enough to find interest and enjoyment for a very long time.

After the "Welcome" by Neon, the dancers guide you through the moves, each taking their turn at being in the front and doing the teaching. There is also the option of a "Step by Step Tutorial," which explains each move in detail, as well as an option to practice just with the music, without the voice-over instructions. The music is marvelous, all with a traditional flavor in its instrumentation and melodies.

Your instructors:
Neon is a stunning blonde born in Russia; a famed dancer, teacher, and choreographer, whose technique is dazzling, and creativity amazing. She has helped bring the art of bellydance to a new level. Blanca is a goddess. Born in Mexico, her sensual style and grace have few equals. Sarah Skinner is a dancer I'm less familiar with, but she is incredibly impressive and beautiful, and fits in well with Neon and Blanca. These 3 dancers are the epitome of "The Three Graces."

"Luscious" is very well produced, and the dancers are filmed in a simple stage setting with excellent lighting, making it easy to discern and follow the movements. The costuming is also lovely, in shades of teal and red, and adds to the visual beauty of the program. This is a great way to learn bellydancing, relieve stress, get your exercise and have fun at the same time. If you want weight loss, many experts agree that the best way to lose is through doing continual movement as is done on this DVD, rather than in aerobics. "Luscious" is a superb DVD for your dance instruction library, and if you're just starting out with bellydancing, it will inspire you to keep practicing and learning.

Hossam Ramzy & Rafa El Tachuela - Flamenco Arabe

An interesting fusion between Arabic music and flamenco. Though it's been done before (by Al Tall and Muluk el-Hwa), it's an enticing sort of fusion to listen to again. Some of the pieces are most straightforward flamenco with some additional Egyptian percussion, thanks to Hossam Ramzy. In other parts, it reverts to a straightforward Egyptian dance rhythm with some careful Spanish guitar in the background. It's when the two mesh that the sound is something worth hearing. Despite the relative obscurity of Rafa Tachuela (actually a German flamenco artist, hence the obscurity), the skill is certainly present to power the music forward. There is some able help from Said Kamal and Mohamed Naiem, providing the Egyptian sounds beyond Ramzy's percussion, and in the end, some help from the Sabri brothers (sons of Sabri Khan, not to be confused with the qawwal duo of the same name) in the addition of a touch of Indian music, as the artists attempt to explore the roots of flamenco through Egyptian music and the roots of Egyptian music through its Indian forebearers. Given that the rise of flamenco came after the Iberian peninsula had been taken over by the Moors, the links between North African music and flamenco are somewhat expected. When the two forms are brought back together to play in tandem, though, something more than the sum of its parts emerges. Baris Manço - Yeni Bir Gün

Baris Manço was among the first proponents of `ethnic-rock’, a musical genre which adheres to the synthesis of a rock beat with the harmonic structure of traditional Turkish folk music. From `Daglar Daglar’ to `Sari Çizmeli Mehmet Aga’ and `Gülpembe’, he demonstrated how Western and traditional elements in contemporary Turkish music could be combined and produced in such profusion. In this respect, he was surely before his time, an avant-garde composer and performer. Later on, pursuing his own path, he never yielded to the ephemeral demands of the popular music industry.

However, this musical dynamism had always been backed by original lyrics. Baris Manço never concentrated on cheap love themes. Rather, he took his themes mostly from everyday life and the daily inter-relations between people, focusing heavily on the problems rooted in the major cultural transformation taking place in Turkey. No doubt, it was his frequent reference to the “loss of traditional human values” which made him a perfect ethical role-model in the eyes of the public. He always adopted a critical stance against the recent distortion of the cultural realm, reflected in a suppression of honesty, selfless love and solidarity in favour of possesive individualism. Therefore his music, as well as his private life, invoked a clear social message.
The sudden death of Baris Manço (Baris means “Peace” in Turkish)Died January 31, 1999 (aged 56) predominantly a renowned pop singer but also a journalist, TV producer and traveller, deeply affected the entire Turkish nation.
No doubt, he will be remembered with great pride and wistfulness by all segments of Turkish society.

Kirpi - The Song

Turkish clarinet player Bulent Altinbas, has assembled an intriguing collection of ethnic jazz in The Song, but listeners have to get past three opening techno/ambient songs of dubious value to get there. The initial tracks are so at odds with the rest that it's hard to explain them, aside from an ill-advised attempt at broadening the recording's commercial appeal.
Altinbas, 34, performing under the nickname of Kirpi (hedgehog in English), started playing Turkish classical on clarinet as a child and has since expanded into modern music with many of the country's better-known artists. His tonal command is unquestionable in excellence and range, from rich low moans that are almost choral to thin vocal highs, and where they anchor the songs is where the album shines.

Ray Barretto - My Summertime

While Ray Barretto's congas have graced more recording sessions than virtually any other conguero of his time, he has also led some refreshingly progressive Latin jazz bands over the decades. His records often have a more tense, more adventurously eclectic edge than those of most conventional salsa groups, unafraid to use electronics and novel instrumental or structural combinations, driven hard by his rocksteady, endlessly flexible percussion work. This no doubt reflects Barretto's wide range of musical interests and also the fact that he came to Latin music from jazz, rather than the usual vice versa route for Latin-descended musicians. Indeed, he has said that he learned how to play swing-style before he came to master Latin grooves. Puerto Rican by extraction, Barretto took up the congas while stationed in Germany during an Army hitch. He began working with American jazz musicians upon his return to New York, eventually replacing Mongo Santamaria in the Tito Puente band for four years, beginning in the late '50s. Barretto made his debut as a leader for Riverside in 1962 and scored a crossover hit (number 17 on the pop charts) the following year on Tico with "El Watusi" (in tandem with a dance craze of the time). He tried to modernize the charanga sound with injections of brass, covering rock and pop tunes of the time as several Latin artists did then. However, Barretto made his main mark in the '60s as a super session player, playing on albums by Gene Ammons, Cannonball Adderley, Kenny Burrell, Lou Donaldson, Red Garland, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Wes Montgomery, Cal Tjader, and several other jazz and pop albums. In moving over to the Fania label in 1967, Barretto began to achieve recognition as one of the leading Latin jazz artists of the day, eventually becoming music director of the Fania All-Stars. In the '70s, he was incorporating rock and funk influences into his music -- with only limited success -- while recording for Atlantic, and in 1981, he made a highly regarded album for CTI La Cuna, with Puente, Joe Farrell, and Charlie Palmieri as guest players. He became music director of the Bravisimo television program and took part in the multi-idiom, all-star, anti-apartheid Sun City recording and video in 1985. In 1992, he unveiled a new Latin jazz sextet, New World Spirit, which made some absorbingly unpredictable albums for Concord Picante

The Story Of Arabic Song

The Story of Arabic Song is a very good musical collection of Middle Eastern music. There are so many interesting qualities to the music - and most likely attributed to my love of music and my travel to the region beginning in my teenage years. So, let's begin the analysis:

Ayouh has a melody which remind me of my travels through Morocco and northern Africa, while the screams toward the middle have the aura I've experienced passing a funeral procession in Turkey ,,, Ala Balad El Mahboub is enjoyable and has an obvious discrete level of tonality as the singer progresses through the lament ,,, Khayef Aqool is very, very soothing (my favorite) ,,, Kunt Fein has an interesting mix of Middle Eastern, western, and Indian influence - whether this fits classically, I'm not certain ,,, Hebeena --- the first half is similar to celebration songs that are played at wedding, reunions, or birthday parties - however - the middle shows that it is truly a middle eastern piece - the transition toward the end of the song is well done - reverting back to its roots ,,, Sanatein is relaxing to listen to - and its instruments - Maza Aqool had good background with vocal accompaniment
If you want to try a sample of classical Arabic music, check this CD out. A very good introduction to Arabic traditions.
