Nadia Gamal - Traditional Arab Dances - The Reference in Belly Dance

Born as Maria Kardiadis to a Greek father and an Italian mother in Alexandria, Egypt, Gamal first began dancing as a part of her mother's cabaret act. Trained in piano as well as several kinds of dance such as ballet and tap, Gamal initially performed European folk dances in her mother's act. When she was 14, an ill dancer in her mother's troupe gave her the opportunity to dance raqs sharqi in Lebanon, which her father had forbidden her to do because of her youth. After this debut, she became a popular dancer and went on to star in many Egyptian films.

In 1968, Gamal became the first raqs sharqi dancer to perform at the Baalbeck International Festival. She also appeared at the Cairo Opera House and danced for King Hussein and the Shah of Iran. Gamal toured Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Latin America and North America during her career. In 1978 and 1981 she briefly taught dance workshops in New York City. Later in her career, Gamal started a school of dance.

Gamal was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990, and while undergoing treatment in Beirut contracted pneumonia and died.

Jamil Bachir - Ud Traditionelle en Iraq

Jamil Bashir was born in Mosul, Iraq in 1921 and is the brother of Munir Bashir. His father, who was a singer, oud player and oud maker, started to teach him the oud when he was around six years old. When the Iraqi Music Institute opened in 1936, Jamil enrolled to learn oud with Sherif Muheddin Haydar and violin with Sando Alio. He finished his oud study in 1943 and his violin study in 1946, graduating with honours degrees in both instruments, and then worked at the Institute as an oud and violin teacher. At the same time he became the head of the Baghdad Radio Orchestra and then the Baghdad Radio Music Department. He also wrote a two-volume book on oud method. Jamil Bashir was also a good singer, but he did not continue singing as he preferred the oud. He died in London on 24th September 1977.

Sa'adoun Al Bayati - Songs Of Iraq

When Baghdad native Saadoun Al-Bayati moved from Iraq to Chicago -- a city that has attracted its share of Middle Eastern immigrants -- he continued to perform traditional Iraqi music. It was in 1973 that Samar Enterprises, a small indie label, released Songs of Iraq, which finds the Iraqi vocalist favoring a minimalist approach and employing only a few instruments. Al-Bayati's only accompaniment consists of percussion and an oud -- because the accompaniment is so spare, Al Bayati's vocals are really isolated. He doesn't have a lot of instruments to hide behind, but then, he doesn't need them. Al-Bayati is obviously a fine singer, and his soulfulness is impossible to miss on "Samra," "Iraqi 6," and other selections

Originally a clarinetist, George Mgrdichian learned to play the oud out of necessity. His early recordings pioneered the introduction of oud music to the west. Warda - El Oyoun El Soud

Warda was born in Puteaux, France to a Lebanese Mother. She started singing at the age of eleven in 1951. She quickly became well-known for her singing of patriotic Algerian songs. When she married in 1962, however, her husband forbade her to sing. In 1972, Algerian president Houari Boumédienne asked her to sing to commemorate Algeria's independence, and she performed with an Egyptian orchestra. As a result her marriage broke up, and she dedicated her life to music.

She then moved to Egypt, where she married the composer Baligh Hamdi. She performed many of his songs and those of other Arabic composers, quickly rising to fame and releasing several albums per year. Additionally, she has starred in a few films.

Warda is a female name of Arabic origin meaning Rose.

At the height of Panarabism, Gamal Abdel Nasser requested that Warda be given a part in a production of Mohammad Abdelwahhab entitled My Great Homeland (Watani Al-Akbar). The song was performed by the biggest stars at the time including Abdel Halim Hafez, Shadia, Sabah (singer), Najat Al-Saghira and Faida Kamel. The song denounced Colonialism and urged for a united Arab People to defeat foreign occupation

Egypte: Les Musiciens DE Nil - Ensemble Mizmar Baladi

Originating from the furthest reaches of Upper-Egypt, The Musicians of the Nile have criss-crossed Europe over the last 20 years. Like the ancient bards of time past, the difference is that they move through space and cultures as comfortably on an airplane as on the back of a donkey.

Discovered in 1975 by Alain Weber, who has been their artistic director ever since, the Musicians of the Nile is a group whose talent has always included some of the greatest figures of the Upper Egyptian tradition - among them, Metqal Qenawi Metqal, Shamandi Tewfiq Metqal and Muhammed Murad Mejali, all three of them members of the famous Mataqil clan of musicians.

Well before the World Music wave, the Musicians of the Nile were the first so-called "Arab Music" group to attain widespread popularity. Frequently imitated and sometimes plagiarized, the Musicians of the Nile have kept up with the parallel currents in music ever since the Chateauvallon Festival in 1975, where they met some of the greatest jazz musicians of the time including Sun Ra and Keith Jarret.

They were a part of the first WOMAD (World of Music Arts and Dance) in 1983, which brought World music to international attention. Their recording for the music of the Last Temptation of Christ and the album Passion brought them to the attention of Peter Gabriel and Real World Records.

In the film "Latcho Drom" directed by Tony Gatlif, which traces the great musical voyage of the Gypsies from India to Spain, has made even more listeners aware that the Musicians of the Nile are a part of the Gypsy tradition.

This album of new instrumental compositions were inspired by experiences in Hossam's life - as usual carefully arranged rhythmically with dancers in mind. I've found this to be a multi-purpose album is full of beautiful tracks with something for every dancer, student and teacher; whether you're a beginner, intermediate or advanced, this CD will be one that will carry you through at all stages of your dancing life, whether it be for practice, performance or teaching. From "Serena" which makes a wonderful performance piece; the title track Gamaal Rawhany which is great for practice or beginners, with it's steady rhythm and clearly defined melody; "Ayousha" - a where the accordian plays with real feeling and clearly defined rhythms again make it as suitable baladi track for beginners upwards; "Agmal Hob", a wonderfully feminine, practice/performance piece that is excellent for beginners as the call and reply between the instruments and orchestra and the rhythm is again so clearly defined, the faster, punchy, joyful baladi accordion/saxophone number "Oyoun Sandra" (a great intermediate baladi performance piece) that is guaranteed to have you out of your seat and dancing the moment you hear it, through to the interesting combination of Baladi and Saaidi styles with "Ya Bel Hob..Ya Balash" (something different for intermediates to try); the beautifully arranged and sounding "Bamoot Feeki" which again is a good performance piece for intermediates and above; and "Mohra Saheyyah" - a very danceable Saaidi number which can be used for intermediate practice or performance - ending with the haunting, more rhythmically complex "Naima's Desert Castle" dedicated to Naima Akef - who you can see dancing on the the "Stars of Egypt" videos); this track is probably suited for more advanced dancers. All these tracks and more! Excellent production quality
